Public meeting set to discuss hazard mitigation plan

Vanderburgh County is updating the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan to better address potential natural hazards before they occur and to obtain eligibility for mitigation funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  This is a multi-jurisdictional planning process and is a cooperative effort between Vanderburgh County, the City of Evansville, and the Town of Darmstadt.  The City of Evansville-Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency is coordinating this planning effort.

Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and gusty winds rolled through northern Vanderburgh County on Thursday night.  Winds gusted to 30 mph at Evansville Regional Airport, where a record 2.70" of rain fell on Thursday.  Another 1.07" of rain fell from midnight through mid morning on Friday, July 8th.  Stacy Schmitt heard roaring winds and headed to the basement of her Bartels Lane home.  When the storm passed, she had shingle and gutter damage to her garage.  No severe weather was reported with the storms, but heavy rains caused some flash flooding.  The yearly rai

County EMA talks with FEMA about reimbursement

Vanderburgh Co.EMA Director Sherman Greer tells 14 News that the agency has had its first phone conference with FEMA about public assistance for flood victims in the area.

The county is submitting for more than $1 million worth of federal reimbursement  for wages it had to pay road crews and emergency responders who helped during the June storms.

Right now they are filling out forms and are not sure of exactly how much money they will get.

Indiana Homeland Security Director asks President to approve federal help for local storm victims

Indiana Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Joseph Wainscott has written President Barack Obama to urge him to “move forward as swiftly as possible” in a decision for citizens and business owners regarding federal assistance for storm damage.

In the letter, Wainscott advised, “The Individual Assistance programs are critical to the recovery of our citizens and should be approved without delay.”

Federal Individual Assistance (for citizens and business owners) was requested for 11 counties on June 8.

This spring’s abnormally warm weather, including a month of June that is seeing temperatures at 10 to 13 degrees above the normal high of 85, has jumpstarted the cooling season for Vectren’s southwestern Indiana electric customers. As such, the utility is reminding customers to consider ways to conserve energy.

"A warmer than normal May and June has quickly forced customers’ to turn on air conditioners and cooling fans to combat these high temperatures," said Doug Petitt, vice president of marketing and conservation.
