North side astronomer captures solar flare

North side astronomer captures solar flare

Mike Borman lives on Evansville's north side, but he trains his special camera on events 93 million miles away.  On Saturday, March 10, while most Tri-Staters were enjoying a sunny afternoon, Mike had his camera trained on the sun.  A giant solar flare was in progress and Mike captured some stunning pictures.

"I just so happened to be taking images of the Sun on Saturday when the flare occurred and I got some images of it." Borman said.

Attached are two images of sunspot 1429 taken through a hydrogen-alpha solar filter attached to my 4" refractor telescope."

Hard freeze likely overnight

Hard freeze likely overnight

Keep an eye on your outdoor plants tonight.  Spring isn’t here yet.  A hard freeze with several hours of sub-freezing temperatures in the mid  20s will be possible overnight.  The entire Tri-State could be affected.  Almost all areas are expected to see at least a light freeze.

Fruit trees, such as apricot or pear trees, are especially vulnerable.

Thunderstorm formation is possible Sunday and Sunday night as a low pressure area passes by to the northwest.

The Weather Channel has been in southern Illinois since yesterday, covering the aftermath of the F-4 tornado that touched down there.

The 170 mile-per-hour winds took some of the debris and sent it on a path into the Evansville area.  Viewers called our newsroom and weather center to tell us about what they found.

Our mild winter has one drawback--fog.

This was the scene on First Avenue around 7:45 this morning.  Visibility wasn't too bad, but there were low lying areas where it was much worse.
