Third Ave. flooding

Third Ave. flooding

This picture was sent in to 14Newstube by a viewer.  Several inches of water were covering the roadway near the Showplace North theatres Monday afternoon.

The rain is giving way to partly cloudy skies today but it'll be chilly on the north side tonight with low temperatures from 40-45 degrees and today's high temperatures not likely to go higher than the upper 60s.

Thursday night's storm packed a pretty good punch north of Evansville, taking out this large tree and bringing other branches down at a home on Old State Road, not far from North High School.

Several homes in the area also had tree branches fall on them, causing some damage.

At the new North High School, portions of the athletic fields also took a hit.

As predicted for the last several days, thunderstorms rolled into the Evansville area at mid-afternoon.

It's a welcome sight for the area, with rainfall for the month running well under normal.  Temperatures are also cooling off.

Tri-State in bullseye for nocturnal tornadoes

Tri-State in bullseye for nocturnal tornadoes

The National Weather Service in Paducah has confirmed what many in the Tri-State already suspected:  We have a lot of tornadoes that occur in the overnight hours.

Using Data from 1950-2005, the NWS has identified a "Nocturnal Tornado Alley".  As the chart shows, more than 40% of our tornadoes have occured at night.

Between 1996 and 2012, 46 people have died in tornadoes in the Paducah warning area (most of the Tri-State).

Record string of record highs

Record string of record highs

Tuesday marked the 4th consecutive day of record high temperatures. We will likely break another record on Wednesday to extend the streak to 5 days in a row of hottest-ever temperatures. This will tie the 5-day streak from August 15-19 set in 1936, the hottest year on record. If we set another record on Thursday, we will have the longest string of records since 1898. By the way, the hottest temperature ever recorded in March was 87 degrees on March 24, 1929.

Conjunction of Jupiter and Venus

Conjunction of Jupiter and Venus

Local astronomer and northsider Mike Borman got some more great shots of the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus.  A conjunction occurs when two celestial objects are in close proximity.  Venus and Jupiter are about 3 degrees apart. The best viewing for the conjunction will peak on Thursday, March 15.
