Retiring North High teacher honored with resolution at Statehouse

State Representatives Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) and Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) presented House Resolution (HR) 41 to Jon Siau today at Evansville North High School. Both legislators co-authored the resolution (read it here).

Siau, an art teacher, is retiring after a 42 year tenure that began in the fall of 1971.

“Our resolution honors an outstanding local teacher,” said Rep. McNamara. “With Jon’s retirement, he is leaving behind an incredible legacy and example of what it means to go above and beyond to serve children. His exemplary service did not go unnoticed.”

Scott School earns 4-Star ranking

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz has announced that Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Scott Elementary School has been named among Indiana’s Four-Star Schools.

In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP+ testing results. A total of 313 schools received the award throughout the state.

Superintendent Ritz congratulated these schools today.

"I am honored to name these schools as our Four Star Schools for this year," said Ritz. "Winning this award required excellent work by teachers, administrators, students and parents throughout the year and on behalf of the entire Indiana Department of Education I send them my sincere congratulations."

Simulator shows students danger of texting and driving

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and AT&T partnered today to provide an opportunity for students at Evansville North High School to learn firsthand the dangers of texting while driving through the use of a driving simulator.

The reality is that no message is so urgent that it is worth the risk one takes when they text while driving. The AT&T Texting & Driving…It Can Wait campaign aims to educate the public, especially teens, on the dangers of texting while driving. Launched in 2009, the campaign’s goal to put an end to the dangerous activity has continuing importance, especially in Indiana, where a statewide ban on texting while driving has been in effect for nearly two years.

Little Husky World receives renewal of accreditation by National Association

Little Husky World Child Development Center, which was one of the first early childhood programs to earn accreditation in the new system from the National Association for the Education of Young Children has successfully completed a five-year accreditation renewal process.

To ensure Little Husky World’s accreditation would continue, administrative officials, teaching staff and families had to prove the program was upholding the mark of quality represented by the NAEYC, the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. Officials with Little Husky World learned earlier this week that the program had successfully completed the process and its accreditation will continue through 2018.
