Central grad wins Atlas scholarship

Atlas World Group, Inc., the parent company of one of the nation’s leading moving companies Atlas Van Lines, has awarded $12,000 in scholarship money to three college students who are connected to Atlas and its subsidiaries.

Three recipient will each receive $4,000.  The winners include Rachel Puckett, a Central high graduate who is a junior at Trinity University in Texas, who was awarded the President's Scholarship.  It is awarded to a child of a full-time employee working at Atlas' headquarters. Rachel is the daughter of Kyle Puckett who works in Transportation Services at Atlas' Evansville headquarters. She is majoring in English.

Beat the heat and support habitat at Bethlehem United Church of Christ

Bethlehem United Church of Christ (6400 Oak Hill Road) will be hosting their 12th Annual Ice Cream Social to benefit Habitat for Humanity on Sunday, July 8 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM.  Each year, Bethlehem helps raise funds and builds a home in the Evansville Area with other UCC and DOC churches.  Their fundraising goal this year is $5,000 toward their portion of the house.  This is one of many activities the church does to raise funds and awareness for Habitat. 

This event features grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, picnic sides, and of course...ICE CREAM!  There are no set menu prices, but a free-will offering for Habitat for Humanity will be accepted.

County horticulture educator wins national award

Larry Caplan, Purdue Extension Horticulture Educator for Vanderburgh County, Indiana, has been selected as the National Winner for the National Association of County Agriculture Agents (NACAA) Communications Award Program.  The award is for his PowerPoint lecture on “The History of Pesticides”.

Caplan will receive his award at the NACAA annual Professional Improvement Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 17.

Caplan has served as Vanderburgh County’s Extension Horticulture Educator since 1986.  He presents over 75 lectures and seminars each year on a wide variety of topics, including lawn and tree care, pest control with and without pesticides, and gardening.  He teaches two Master Gardener classes every fall, and oversees the volunteer efforts of over 350 Master Gardeners.

Joe Easley, the Senior Pastor of Central United Methodist Church, will be retiring in a special service at 9:30am Sunday, June 24, in the church sanctuary.  The service will be a celebration of 12 years of service to Central Methodist Church and a pastoral career that has spanned 42 years with appointments to many churches throughout the Southern Indiana Methodist Conference.

North High School’s football stadium will now be known as Bundrant Stadium, following a dedication Tuesday commemorating the generosity of North High School alumnus Chuck Bundrant and his wife, Diane.  The media center and a science laboratory at North were also dedicated in recognition of his extended family.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Board of School Trustees voted in May to honor the Bundrant family’s generosity by naming two rooms after the family -- The Charles L. and Algie M. Bundrant Media Center and the Joe and Marie Schultheis Science Laboratory Classroom.

Evansville's first women's cycling team racing in inaugural River City Bicycle Classic

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- The inaugural River City Bicycle Classic is this Saturday.

Many people are happy about the national race coming to Evansville, but one all-women's team is particularly excited.

Caron Leader used the morning to train for the big race with her husband.

"We're just doing a light recovery spin. Probably an hour, hour and a half just a nice leisurely ride," says Leader.

An hour is considered leisurely for Caron, who can ride up to 15 hours or more on a busy training week.

Bethlehem UCC installs new pastor

Bethlehem United Church of Christ installed its new pastor, Rev. Mark Sirnic, recently.

Rev. Sirnic’s stepfather, Rev. Paul Mohr, a retired UCC minister, drove 1100 miles with his wife this week to be a part of this service, and share in the joy of watching his son carry on his legacy.

The service included special music by the church organist as well as the Chancel and Handbell Choirs.
