Vanderburgh Co. house destroyed by flames
VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE)-
The Evansville Fire Department is investigating a large house fire that happened Sunday morning on Old State Road.
That fire happened at 10:30 Sunday morning at 18100 Old State Road.
Officials tell 14 News that no one was home at the time of the fire, but a neighbor tells us he saw the fire from across the street and knew the family's dog was trapped inside. He says he ran to the home to try to save the dog, but unfortunately he did not make it in time.
It's especially devastating to the family of Mark and Rachel Riggs, who lived there, since it's no the first time they've lost their home.
Officials say the home is a total loss, and friends and neighbors of the family tell us the Riggs' built this house after losing their home in a tornado three years ago.
Altogether, six people lived in the home, and are told they are now staying with relatives nearby.
14 News spoke to Pastor Doug Heiman of nearby Bluegrass United Methodist Church, who says the church is collecting donations for the Riggs family.
"They have three boys and a grandmother living with them, as well, so there are some needs there. So, folks can go to our website bluegrassumc.org. From there, that will lead them to a Facebook page that will direct them and tell them what some of the needs are, and how they can further help this family," Pastor Heiman said.
We haven't received word yet on what the cause of this fire is, but once we do, we will let you know.
