Lloyd Pool reopens after burst pipe, questions arise over its future | News

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- Evansville's Lloyd Pool reopened Tuesday after being closed due to a burst water pipe. 

"It has nothing whatsoever to do with the pool. It was simply effects of the weather," said Denise Johnson, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department.

With the dirt still fresh from repairs, students arrived back to Lloyd Pool after having to miss some crucial swim time ahead of this weekend's city swim meet.

"It's frustrating and it is disappointing because I know how much these kids want to swim," Johnson said. 

"I think this is just a real opportunity when something like this occurs to bring out the need for a natatorium, a new natatorium," Jeff Taylor said.

Greater Evansville Aquatic Team board member Jeff Taylor says the burst pipe is just the latest problem for the aging facility.

He says the recent renovations have kept the pool alive, but he questions for how long.

"It's not a matter of if the Lloyd is going to break down but when is it going to break down and how long will it be broken down the next time," Taylor said. 

Lloyd Pool is the only of it's kind in the city, and pool managers say there is no alternative when it comes to where to hold this weekend's meet.

"We are doing everything we can to monitor the situation so that nothing happens to prevent the meet from Saturday," Johnson said.

Johnson says the warmer temperatures are causing the ground to shift and that's causing the leaks.

If there are no other problems, she says the swim meet will go on as scheduled.
